Freeport fight to improve in week three

FREEPORT, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - Heading into week three of the high school football season, we can start considering momentum. There's a huge difference between starting off 1-1 versus 0-2.

Two teams who picked up pivotal first wins last week are Freeport and Holmes. Friday night in Bonifay, they'll play each other.

Holmes is fresh off a 34-13 victory over Bozeman, while the Bulldogs ousted Lowndes Academy from Alabama 34-0.

Even with the new region points system awarding points for losses, another victory would go a long way towards instilling more confidence. Freeport is in a good position though. A season opening loss to Vernon may have actually helped set a positive tone for the rest of the season.

"We came back Monday after that loss and everybody admitted something that they did wrong," head coach Shaun Arntz said. "That's the first step in moving forward. Everybody did a really good job of preparing last week to take care of business on Friday, so [this Monday], we wanted to keep that momentum rolling."

Escaping Holmes with a victory won't be an easy task.

"They run a very different style of offense than most teams run these days and they run it very effectively," Arntz added. "If a defense is not disciplined in what they're supposed to be doing and what their game plan is, a very simple play can turn into a huge gain."

Kickoff Friday night is slated for 7 central.
