PANAMA CITY, Fla (WJHG/WECP) - The Gulf Coast Commodores men's basketball team's working through its third week of official fall practice with the season opener a week from Friday.
Coach Powell and his team coming off a 21-7 record from a year ago, but finished just 5-7 in conference play, so they missed out on a berth to state.
To change that, Powell knows they have to get better, first and foremost, on the boards, as they were consistently out-rebounded last season. And he took that to heart in recruiting in the spring and summer.
"This year we were able to go out, and find some good post players and some versatile guys that have some size," Jay Powell, Gulf Coast State College men's basketball coach said. "And then also returning Josh Wade, Will Robinson, Dyshane Murphy. Those guys were able to add some pounds and some weight in a good way, in a positive way. So I like the size and the strength of our men. Not to say that we're ready to go yet especially for conference play but I think we have some good size, some good pieces and the ability to compete in a lot of different ways against a variation of teams."
The Commodores first game is next Friday against Southwest Tennessee at Northwest Florida. Their home opener is November 7.
