GRACEVILLE, FL (WJHG/WECP) It's one of the few area football teams in our area still working this week, still striving for a possible state championship, Graceville.
The Tigers are into the second round of the state playoffs,
or what they call on the 1-A level the region finals, the second of four necessary wins to win a championship.
Coach Thompson's Tigers now 7-4 after a convincing 43-7 win over visiting Northview in their playoff opener this past Friday night.
The reward for that, they get to host Baker in round two, the Gators will come east sporting a perfect 11-0 mark, after a playoff win last week over Cottondale.
Tuesday we spoke with coach Grant Thompson about what if any changes he's making this week in practice getting set for those Gators.
"Not in how we structured practice, I just think the kids are a little more focused. Baker's a really good team, and they're really physical. So we're trying to make sure that we're sound on defense and that we're fitting right to everything. Offensively we're just trying to make sure that we're still playing fast and aggressive. We're really small but we've got some really good players and they know that, and they're confident in themselves."
Coach Thompson knows the Tigers do have one advantage going into this game Friday, they are playing at home.
"I think just in terms of your preparation, how you get ready. You do such a better job here at home in your routine and around things we're comfortable with. So it's a huge difference for us, in how we play, playing at home. I think there's a lot of excitement here, coaches and players are excited. The town's excited, it's been 11 years since we've had a round two home playoff game."
The Tigers gunning for a third state championship, the first two coming in '88 and '93.
That game Friday 7:30 at Graceville, we'll have the highlights for you late Friday night.
