The Gulf Coast womens basketball team is just about set to start play in the 8 team, single elimination Region 8, or State tournament.
Gulf Coast opens with a quarterfinal game against Broward.
The Lady Commodores heading south as the defending State and National Champions which as Coach Scovel will tell you means nothing this time around.
Gulf Coast loaded up the bus Tuesday, spent some time practicing in the Ocala area this morning, and then the plan was to take in some of the men's action, and here's why!
"Well just the fact that it's different, it's the State Tournament." coach Scovel says. "It's more exciting, the atmosphere there is different. We need to get ready for that. We can see it, we can feel it, we watch the men. Because it's a one and done thing. You don't line up and play tomorrow if you lose. So that makes it a lot more exciting. You watch some games, you'll see some close games and see some plays. So it's just kind of an opportunity to get ready."
Gulf Coast sporting a conference record of 11-1, 23-2 overall. That alone should breed confidence. So does having the experience of having won in Ocala last March, though not a lot of these players were part of that title run.
"Yeah but you never now until you get there." Scovel says "So we'll see. We're fortunate that a lot of these freshmen played on championship teams, and hopefully some of that will come back to them, as we get into the tournament. And maybe that experience will help us."
The game against Broward set for 3 eastern, we'll have highlights Thursday night.
