LYNN HAVEN, Fla (WJHG/WECP) - It's a big week ahead for some area girls soccer teams, as they head into state playoff mode.
One of those teams is Mosley, the squad led by Coach Marek Betkowski, who are the champs of 3A-2 and are getting set to host Choctaw in their first round playoff match Tuesday, or what they call the region quarterfinals.
It's the first of five necessary wins to claim a state championship.
Mosley knocking off district and county rival Arnold just over a week ago for the district crown, the program's seventh consecutive district title. And the 'fins are making their 10th straight appearance in the playoffs.
This time around, more than a week between the district title match and the region quarterfinal, and you wonder, is that a good thing, or a bad thing?
"Yes and no," Marek Betkowski, Mosley girls soccer coach said. "We do like it because we have players with flu and players with concussion. So extra week will help us get those players back. We do not like because when you play constantly at the end of the season, and you have more than a week break it may affect your game a little bit. So as far as your speed, pace of play, aggressiveness, so it depends on what angle you're watching into it."
That playoff match Tuesday night between Choctaw, the runner up in district one, and Mosley, set for 7 at Gavlak on the Arnold campus.
"This journey has been something unreal," Gracie Mullins, Mosley senior midfielder said. "With all the underclassment coming in it's definitely our team chemistry is great. And we're kind of at a high in our season right now, and I'm kind of excited to get out there and play."
"We don't know that much about Choctaw because we didn't have the opportunity to play against them," Betkowski said. "We played them a couple of years ago, here in town and the games were very competitive. Just by watching the scores they have against the teams we know, and we play and our scores against the same teams, it's telling us that it's gonna be probably a 50-50 game."
The other first round matches set for area girls teams Tuesday, Arnold travels to face Gulf Breeze, the champs of district one.
In 4A, Niceville hosts Lincoln. In 2A, North Bay Haven's hosting Taylor at Harders Park, South Walton in Tallahassee. And in 1A Rocky Bayou travels to Jacksonville.
