McElwain names Franks starting quarterback, suspends two more players for opener.

GAINESVILLE, FL (WJHG/WECP) Florida head coach Jim McElwain has ended the suspense, he's going with redshirt freshman Feleipe Franks as his starting quarterback against Michigan in Dallas Saturday afternoon.

Coach Mac making that announcement Wednesday afternoon in the midst of what was a rather eventful day on the U.F. campus. Earlier in the day the coach announced he had suspended two more players for the opener. Though not giving the reason for the suspensions of redshirt freshman receiver Mike Hill and starting tailback Jordan Scarlett, it is believed these two suspensions are related to the debit card scandal which caused the suspension of Antonio Callaway and 7 other Gators.

The loss of Scarlett means Florida will face Michigan without their leading receiver and running back from 2016.

Back to the QB situation, coach Mac saying Wednesday “We’ll start Feleipe. We still have a plan moving forward with everything that we have. We had some choices and some real hard choices there, and I think that’s really good.”

Without being asked Wednesday, he announced Franks as the starter.because he has a strong arm, and he's earned the start based on his play in spring, summer and fall practice.
