Sandestin's Baytowne Marina is now just 19 days away from hosting the biggest money fishing event in our area.
The 16th Emerald Coast Blue Marlin Classic at Sandestin set for June 19 through the 24.
Last June, despite Tropical Storm Cindy blowing through the Gulf some 36 boats managed to haul in some nice sized fish, including Mike Hickey of Destin who caught the biggest blue, a 553 pounder.
This time around, well let's just say the boat count is getting back to big time numbers.
"So as far as the planning stages, we've been planning all year," Adam Alfonso, ECBC Tournament Director. "It's a huge event for Sandestin, for our community, and for all of the Gulf (fishing tournament) circuit. We currently have 82 boats signed up for the tournament. We're expecting another 15 boats to sign up. So we'll definitely exceed our record of 85 boats that fished in 2016."
An 838 pounder was caught last year, and 1.95 million was handed out.
So this year could easily top the two million mark in prize money!
