Holmes County High School World History Teacher Wins Golden Apple

Panama City - This week's Golden Apple Award winner teaches World History at Holmes County High School. You could say Becky Motley is part of the fabric of the school, with a teaching legacy that literally spans generations.

Ms. Motley is a story teller, but her stories don't come from fairy tales. They are stories of world powers, conflicts, and triumphs. "I like the stories behind the history, not just the facts and the dates. I like to tell the stories," said Ms. Motley.

Ms. Motley herself is a bit of living Holmes County history. "This is 36 years continuously. This is the only school I have ever taught at. I taught my current principal and the assistant principal, and my former principal, who is now the superintendent of schools. I have taught entire families and now I'm teaching their grandchildren," she explained.

"Ms. Motley was my favorite when I went to school here," said Principal Mickey Hudson. "Our classwork was always rigorous but she always made it fun," he said. "My dad had her when she first started teaching, my older brother had her and my older sister had her," said Corey Pippin, one of the students who nominated her.

She tries to instill in her students an understanding that they too are part of history by creating a personal record. "One of my favorite things about this class is that every year we do a scrapbook for her class and it's something we will remember for the rest of our lives," said Haylee Mann, who also nominated Ms. Motley.

Congratulations to Ms. Motley, this week's Golden Apple Award winning teacher. I ended up at Holmes County High School for a reason. There were some possibilities of job openings that I was passed over for and I didn't understand it at the time but I believe there was a reason why I ended up here. I don't think I would be the same person, I don't think I would be the same teacher had I gone someplace else."
