PANAMA CITY BEACH- This week's Golden Apple award winner teaches 2nd grade at Patronis Elementary in Panama City Beach. Brenda Porter was nominated by a parent who writes: "The children in Ms. Porter's class absolutely adore her, as do the parents! She makes everyday fun and exciting. Her laugh can be heard clear across campus and there is always something fun going on. I have seen an extreme interest in reading in my child and I attribute that to Mrs. Porter's encouragement."
There is never a dull moment in Brenda Porter's second grade classroom. Each day starts with the "Porter's Pirates" theme song to get everyone on board. "That is one of my favorite parts of the day," said 2nd grader Jenna Barker. "I just try to make it a positive, happy place for everybody," said Ms. Porter. "Her laugh just echoes and she brings out all the fun in her kids and they just really want to do their best for her," said MaryKate Underwood, a guidance counselor at Patronis Elementary.
She works hard to instill the love of reading in her students. "We do it all day long, we write in every subject all day long. They don't know they are working it's so much fun. They don't realize what they accomplish in a day," said Ms. Porter.
Ms. Porter loops with her classes, which means she taught these students in first grade. "They are very special to me and I think that is why we are so close. We can encourage each other all day long and work together so well." "She is precious and sweet to everyone," said Jacob Burnham. "She is a nice teacher and one of my favorites," said Abby Resch. "Two years with Ms. Porter and these students do awesome," said Mrs. Underwood.
Congratulations to Ms. Porter, this week's Golden Apple award winning teacher. "It's such a fun job and I think sometimes people don't see with all the politics and everything that comes with teaching that it really is the best place to be," said Ms. Porter.
