BAY COUNTY-- This week's golden apple winner teaches 2nd grade at Waller Elementary School. Bertie Broaddus was nominated by a parent who writes:
Mrs. Broaddus recognizes her students for their individual strengths in each subject and they together work on their challenges. We recommend her for the golden apple because of her compassion to every child's need.

In Mrs. Broaddus' 2nd grade classroom hands on learning also means on the floor.

"I have to touch it smell it feel it to learn it so I teach that way," Mrs. Broaddus said.

On this day students are learning about the human body, by creating life-size paper cutouts of themselves!

While science is important in her classroom, she stops everything to read.

"No matter what subject we are in I will stop and say, I have the need to read," Mrs. Broaddus said.

Hers was the first 2nd grade class to read a million words.

"Mrs. Broaddus is very competitive when we talk about reading. we use AR, Accelerated Reading program here which is a motivational piece, but that piece would not have the motivation unless Mrs. Broaddus was behind it. She is in competition with the whole school I think, to be sure her kids have more point than the rest of her school.," Peggy Bunch, Waller Elementary Principal, said.

And event better than that, her students genuinely love to read.

"Do you like reading?"
"Very much actually," Gabrielle Milwicz said.
"I like learning how to read," Tommy Hedges said.
"In the classroom she lets us play games," Valerie Phillip said.

"Its a calling to help children become better and do the very best that they can," Mrs. Broaddus said.

Congratulations to Mrs. Broaddus, this week's golden apple award winning teacher.
