City of Destin officials hope to complete phase one before the busy Memorial Day Weekend, referred to as the beginning of the 100 day summer season.
Crews are removing sheet pile and dredging the Coast Guard Channel.
The city is funding this phase of the project.
"This has been seen by several councils, and our former Mayor, Sam Seevers, worked really hard to make this happen,” said Dough Rainer, the City’s Public Information Manager. “This is the most important project in the city currently, which is to stabilize that point because it protects the harbor, our fishing fleet, and our businesses inside the harbor, which is the life of this community."
Natural Resources Damage Assessment is giving the city more than $10 million for phase two of the project, which is scheduled to being this winter.
