Cause Found for Tyndall Jet Crash

Updated: Wed 3:54 PM, Sep 08, 2004

Air Force officials say they now know what caused an F-15 jet to crash into a St. George Island coastal swamp back in May.

The Air Force says it was “an unintended ejection” which caused the May 21 crash that left an F-15 Eagle embedded in a marsh at St. George Island.

The plane's pilot, who parachuted into the Gulf of Mexico off the Florida Panhandle island, suffered minor injuries. He's not being blamed.

A crash investigation board has found an air regulation valve on the pilot's body harness snagged the ejection seat handle. When the pilot turned his head to check his position, the handle was raised, triggering the ejection.

The pilot was in a mock dogfight with a student pilot in another plane at the time.
