Construction Delays Still Hindering New Airport

Three months after the new Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport opened, Airport Authority board members are still dealing with construction issues and contractors.

One of the last of the projects to be competed is the general aviation private hangars but contractors are promising they should have it wrapped-up within the next couple of weeks.

At Tuesday’s Airport Authority meeting, Board Member, Rick Koehnemann expressed his frustration over the t-hangars not being ready.

PBS&J contractors promised the board it would be completed by next week. But Koehnemann says it's been one delay after another.

"It appears now that the card reader is last item on their punch list to get finished. They said it was going to be two weeks which is absurd, you know they ought to be able to have it done in 2 or 3 days and then the private pilots at the old airport can start moving to the new airport," said Koehnemann.

The card reader has to be in place for security issues before the planes can move in. So for now, the finished hangars remain empty until the sub-contractor can get that installed.

"I know there's a lot of frustration. They would like to come to the new airport. This is where their fuel is. I know it's such a terrible inconvenience and we're sorry for that but hopefully this will be behind us very soon," said Koehnemann.

The setback hasn't only caused frustration for aircraft owners and the board, it's become a logistical issue as well because the planes are still at the old airport and until they can move them, the old site can't be turned over to the people who bought it.

"I'm a builder and I understand where they're coming from, but this comment it's going to be another two weeks. That is used far too often. It is ridiculous. They can get it done in about 3 days. It doesn't take the 2 weeks. That comment is a bad reflection on the construction company," said Koehnemann.

Another long-running contractor issue should be resolved by Labor Day weekend. They've assured the board retention Pond "C" will be completed and up to DEP code by then.

Phoenix Construction Company officials say they should be off the airport site by the second week in September.

All these people whining about ECP... It's about more than GA. And don't give me your grief about construction methods... We've been building in the sand and muck all over Florida for the past 40 years... takes more time and knowledge than construction "up north". We do it without your "unions and trade organizations" and do a darned good job considering the swamps we often build in. ECP will become a great asset to the beaches and travelers to our area. And GA pilots like myself are delighted to have a new facility and FBO more centrally located. I can't wait to get the cross runway built and increase the commercial flights in and out of the pan handle. Those of us who plan on using this facility for many years to come are very proud of this great accomplishment. Born and raised in Florida and this region I have no problem with using the scrub pines and land for a properly managed project of this size even with cost overruns. In all we are getting something badly needed in our area.

This was a facility that should never even have been built. No need for it except to further the corporate greed and local Chamber of Commerce boosterism. its been one mistake after another which has caused the likely biggest users of the airport to flee to smaller, less convenient airports around the region to to the higher costs, inconvenient and inaccessible facilities, and overall uncertainty whether this is even a viable facility. This is even with ignoring the cost over-runs, the general stupidity of building an airport over an active watershed that will destroy the very eco-structure that draws to the area. In all, very sad. They just destroyed a nice downtown airport that was already under-utilized but convenient to everyone, to build a white elephant that really serves no real purpose.

Typical of Florida construction.....Takes twice as long as anywhere else..Why? NO SKILLED or dedicated WORKERS, no proper training (ie: union or trade orginizations)...
