Gulf Coast Tar Balls Being Auctioned On EBay
Font Size:

Despite the possible underwater oil plumes and the potential long-term effects of the oil spill, most people believe the worst is over.
Some are actually trying to make a buck off of the country's worst natural disaster--by selling tarballs on ebay, even though they're potentially toxic.

Some see the recent on-line offerings as just another ebay opportunist's grab for cash.

Type 'BP oil spill' in the ebay search engine, and you'll find a whopping 1,608 results.
Campaign t-shirts, parody slogans, and other BP affiliated odds and ends.

But nothing quite like this.

A Jacksonville seller is selling tarballs claimed to have been picked up in Destin on July 28th.

"You've got to be kidding me" says Chris Martin when she heard the news.

Visiting Kentucky resident Annie McDevitt is appalled by the idea.
" It's crazy, crazy, okay, okay, what are you supposed to do with them when you buy them? I don't get it?"

The seller has some ideas, suggesting they be kept as a collectors item or used for educational purposes.

He even promises to ship the tarballs in the gulf water where they were found for authenticity.

Bridgett Crush, also from Kentucky, says she can't believe someone would sell tarballs.
"That's horrible that they would try to make a profit on the things that are happening".

And a big profit at that.
The seller is asking $250.00.
But it's unlikely he'll get it.
The current bid is just 99-cents.

The jacksonville seller is not the only one.
The highest tarball bid we've seen on ebay so far is $15.50, plus $8.00 for shipping.
