Seventy-five high school seniors from Tennessee were hard at work, helping to get the Bay County Humane Society back into shape.
The Lausanne Collegiate School senior class has been chipping in to shape up the old shelter on Bay Avenue off East 15th street.
Wednesday, the students continued the landscaping work they began Tuesday. This is the second year the Lausanne students have spent their "service learning" senior trip at the local Humane Society, which has been a big help for the cash strapped organization.
"It was really just luck," Says Jeremiah McCulley, the director of the Bay County Humane Society, "The Habitat for Humanity said they didn't need them this year and that's where they normally volunteer and Director New, the Principal of their school called me and asked if we could utilize 75 high school students for volunteers and I said absolutely. I could put them to work so I did."
The students' Principal New agrees it a great opportunity, "The last two years they have done what (Humane Society representatives) calculate to be $30,000 dollars worth of work for them. There's nothing like the synergy of 70 high school seniors and what they can do."
The school launched the service learning program by working in New Orleans 5 years ago, right after Hurricane Katrina.
They'll get to relax some, spending Thursday at Shell Island before heading back to Memphis.
