Walton County health officials are reporting a horse testing positive for Eastern Equine Encephalitis. Triple-E is a mosquito-borne disease that infects a wide variety of animals and people. There is no cure.

70-90% of the horses that contract the disease die within 2-4-days after the symptoms appear.

The symptoms in humans include high fever, muscle pain, altered mental status, headache, meningeal irritation, photophobia, and seizures.

The best way to prevent Triple-E is to avoid mosquitoes and practice the 5 "D's". Avoid being outdoors at dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are seeking blood.

Dress in clothing that covers most of your skin. Use mosquito repellents that contain at least 30% of the active ingredient DEET. And drain standing water from areas around your house that could become breeding grounds for mosquitoes.

We have them so bad in my yard because of a drunk neighbor who refuses to dispose of the multiple containers that have 1000's of them (verified by Beach Mosquito). We've called code enforcement and awaiting their reply. I'm a hostage in my own home and can't walk my two tiny dogs without getting at least 8 to 10 bites every time - even during the day. We've put bug killer in our yard, but we can't do anything about the neighbor's. They have a brick wall so sneaking in and emptying the containers is not an option. Anyone have any other ideas - PLEASE!
