St. Andrew State Park Campground Area Very Popular For Labor Day Holiday

Saint Andrew's State Park was packed all weekend with campers. Park officials report nearly every single camp site was rented. State officials credit the park's popularity in part to the slow economy.

There are 176 camping spaces on the property and every one was full Friday, Saturday and Sunday. A space costs $28 a night and the assistant park manager says that, coupled with the surroundings are the draw.

"I do believe that and a lot of people like coming to a place where they can get back to nature...We have deer and racoons here...You don't get to see that in a hotel," Debra Walker said.

One family spent the day in the park for their family reunion and they also had some more inexpensive ways to enjoy the holiday including a kite flying contest. The winner got a dollar beer and dollar hotdog from a local restaurant.

Walker said a lot of campers left today, and the Kamuf family reunion attendees did not seem to mind.

"The happiest sight we've seen, you, you know we are staying here a while and we saw all the traffic leaving today, but when we go tomorrow all the traffic will be gone," Bill Kamuf said.

Walker said this holiday weekend brought more tourists to the park than the Fourth of July holiday weekend.
