Springfield’s city commissioners are trying to find out why the city is not in compliance with state statutes for firefighter benefits.
The issue came to light after the death of Springfield's Fire Chief Chris Adams in January 2007. His family received 20 thousand dollars in death benefits less than state law requirements.
City officials say they thought the insurance was adjusting the city's premiums each year to meet the standards, but apparently that wasn't the case.
Bill Renfro, addressedx the commission as an Adams' family representative. "That policy paid $30,000 instead of the 50 that's required by state law"
Springfield commissioners say they'll make the changes necessary to meet the state requirements, but did not give a timetable for that action.
