The former A.D. Harris High School campus is in new hands. School board members approved a lease agreement Wednesday afternoon, turning the facility into the A.D. Harris Learning Village.

The A.D. Harris Improvement Society Inc. was formed a few months ago to find a suitable use for the school building, once the students and faculty moved to the Rosenwald campus.

The group's members decided it would best be used as a home for community-based, non-profit organizations.

Blondell Harris McGowan, daughter of A.D. Harris, Sr., helped from the committee. She says her father's legacy is education and teaching people to be the best they can be and she's very excited to see his legacy carried on.

"We've done a lot of hard work and we're looking forward to doing more so we can serve the community and live up to the promises that they wanted to see happen and we want to see it happen as well," said Blondell Harris McGowan.

The new lease holders plan to make the learning village a green campus with a community garden, a wi-fi cafe, a culinary arts program and a community entertainment center.

The work force board will become the first tenant this Friday, with many other organizations expressing interest in leasing space.

The school district will supplement the cost of utilities and insurance up $5,000 dollars a month.
