U.S. 98 between Fort Walton Beach and Destin will open Tuesday evening to two-way traffic. Crews from C.W. Roberts have worked nearly around the clock to get two lanes passable again.
Tommie Speights of the Department of Transportation's District Office in Chipley says the firm will continue working to open the entire stretch to all four lanes of traffic within 120 days.
The four-lane stretch was washed out last week by the storm surge from Hurricane Ivan as it came over the dunes and into Choctawhatchee Bay along a narrow stretch of Santa Rosa Island.
Highway 98 is the only road leading west from Destin into Ft. Walton Beach. It’s also a main route heading further west into Pensacola. The same thing happened nine years ago when Hurricane Opal ravaged northwest Florida and destroyed the same stretch of four-lane highway.
