Ivan Survivors

Getting aid to Hurricane Ivan victims is more than just a local effort. Dozens of organizations from all over the country are pouring support into the Panhandle.

Jewell Menge and her husband sat on their back porch and watched Ivan's first effects come ashore.

"We saw the spout touch down and the water spray up and we jumped up and ran in here."

The couple got only a few steps inside when the house started to shake and a two-by-four flew through their wall. The Menge's looked outside to see what was breaking up. Next door they saw longtime neighbor and friend Nancy King, who didn't make it to the bathroom where the rest of her family took cover from the storm.

Since then Menge says the outpouring has been overwhelming. Menge says those helping hands made all the difference in the days following Ivan as families sifted through 30 years of memories and rubble.

Another 25,000 pounds of food arrived in Bay County Tuesday for people like the Menge’s. "Second Harvest" food bank turned the food over to several local distributors.
