Sheriff Denies Rumors of Stacks of Hurricane Corpses

Updated: Wed 4:19 PM, Sep 22, 2004

A northwest Florida sheriff is trying to stop rumors of hidden bodies from Hurricane Ivan.

Escambia County Sheriff Ron McNesby in Pensacola says there are not “dozens and hundreds of bodies” hidden anywhere.

He says it is true that portable morgues are parked behind Sacred Heart Hospital, the site of the county's morgue in Pensacola, but he says they're not stacked with corpses.

McNesby also announced two more storm-related deaths, bringing Escambia's total to 10 and the state's total to at least 18. Seven people remain missing in Escambia, but McNesby says they are not necessarily believed to be dead.
