State Surveys Beaches to Assess Erosion From Three Hurricanes

Florida has been blasted by three hurricanes this summer, but it appears Ivan caused the worst beach erosion, according to a preliminary survey by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection.

The agency dispatched workers to assess beach erosion following each of the hurricanes. They took thousands of pictures as they documented damage to beaches, dunes and homes across 25 counties.

A spokesman says of the three hurricanes, it looks as though beach erosion is worst in the Florida Panhandle. Experts say all of the damaged beaches can be restored to their original conditions.

Coastal communities will use the state's assessment reports to develop restoration plans.

DEP says beaches that have the highest need will get top priority for restoration work.
