Hurricane Ivan Is Taking a Major Toll on Northwest Florida Farmers

Experts say the cotton and peanut crops have taken a heavy hit from the storm which roared ashore a week ago Thursday.

Agriculture leaders said revenues for the farmers could be down at least 10 percent. That translates into an average of about one million dollars in losses.

Clyde Smith is with the Jackson County Extension Office in Marianna. He says, “We may see some difficulties in defoliating the cotton, but right now we have a 10 percent average loss across the county because of the storm.”

Jackson County has over 120 farmers, with more than 30,000 acres in cotton and more in peanuts in Jackson, Washington, Holmes and Calhoun Counties.
