The barrier island communities of Pensacola Beach and Perdido Key are now officially closed indefinitely, except for insurance adjusters, utility and cleanup crews.
Monday was the last day Pensacola Beach and Perdido Key residents could retrieve their belongings before both areas are closed indefinitely. Officials say they plan to open them back up in stages to allow residents to return, but they have no idea when that's going to be.
Residents have been allowed on the beach since last Wednesday, although Monday was the first day they were permitted to actually drive to homes on Pensacola Beach.
Because of road blockages after Hurricane Ivan, trolleys and buses have been transporting residents from the business district to the outlying neighborhoods.
At least six vehicles got stuck Monday and there were no tow trucks on the island to pull them out.
