Hotel DeFuniak
The Hotel DeFuniak, built in 1920 by the free masons, usually stays at about 50 percent capacity, and that's just the living guests. Reporter: Elyse MolstadEmail Address: elyse.molstad@wjhg.com |

The decorative ghosts displayed in the windows of the 87-year-old hotel are nothing compared to the real ghosts guests and staff claim they've seen within the walls of the hotel.
The hotel has ten very unique rooms but the most unique room might go to the aviary room whose guest have been known to up and leave in the middle of the night.
Michelle Harding, co-owner of Hotel DeFuniak, said, "They got a Ouija board, left in the middle of the night and we never saw them or heard from them again."
Room number 8, the aviary room, is said to be the most haunted. A hotel employee was cleaning the room when a lamp started rocking back and forth by itself.
Others say they've heard and seen unexplained phenomena throughout the hotel. However, not everyone is a believer.
Betty West, innkeeper, said, "I'm not convinced at all. I'm kind of tough when it comes to those beliefs."
But desk clerk Melanie Cobb says she's seen and heard far too much to not believe.
Melanie Cobb said, "I'm afraid to shut the door because I don't know what's on the other side."
Despite the sightings, Harding says the ghosts have yet to deter guests from checking in.
Michelle Harding said, "I think it helps business there’s a lot of people into haunted houses, so I think it helps business."
Bruce Weathers says he's not been bothered by any ghosts and would recommend anyone stay at the hotel.
"My stay has been pleasant and the food is fantastic."
The aviary room is one of the few that are empty tonight. If you want to see for yourself if the ghost stories are true, you still have time if for a late check-in.
