Every Parent’s Worst Nightmare; a Tragedy for a Calhoun County Family

By  |

Two sisters were killed as they walked along a rural highway to catch their school bus at around 6:30 Wednesday morning.

Seventeen-year-old Angelina and 15-year-old Theresa Nevitz were both students at Altha High School. They were hit from behind by a van as they walked on the pavement along Calhoun County Road 274 in the fog. Both girls were pronounced dead at the scene.

Their mother came up on the accident scene shortly after the girls were hit. The two were her only children, according to neighbors.

The driver was identified as 39-year-old Jorge Betancourt. He was not charged. A passenger in the van was 16-year-old Amanda Jones. Neither was injured.

The Florida Highway Patrol is continuing its investigation.
