GOP Works to Shore Up Bush Lead in Panhandle

Mississippi Governor and Republican Party Leader Haley Barbour was in Panama City lending support to the local GOP.

The 56-year-old Barbour was President Reagan’s Chief of Political Affairs, and later served as Chairman of the Republican National Committee.

He told local Republicans he believes President Bush will get 70 percent of the vote in some Panhandle counties. Barbour says it is crucial to get a big turnout in the Panhandle in Bush is to win Florida.

He commented even though Bush did well in this area four years ago he thinks he should have and even more impressive showing here this election.

Barbour is one of 25 GOP governors currently hitting the campaign trail for George Bush.
