Freedom Buys Port St. Joe Publisher of Three Weekly Newspapers

Florida Freedom Newspapers Inc. has purchased a group of six publications from The Star Publishing Co. of Port St. Joe Inc. and its affiliates.

The purchase announced Wednesday includes three Florida Panhandle weeklies, The Star in Port St. Joe, Apalachicola Times and Carrabelle Times, and three monthly publications, the Gulf Coast Real Estate Guide, Panhandle Beacon and Hook & Trigger.

The purchase price was not disclosed.

Florida Freedom is an indirect subsidiary of Freedom Communications Inc. based in Irvine, Calif. The Florida company owns two dailies, the Northwest Florida Daily News in Fort Walton Beach and The News Herald in Panama City, the twice-weekly Destin Log and weekly Walton Sun.

"We are delighted to add these community products to our portfolio," said Karen Hanes, vice president of Florida Freedom and publisher of The News Herald. "We look forward to continuing the community coverage that readers and advertisers have come to expect from these publications."

Freedom Communications owns 66 daily and weekly newspapers and eight television stations.
