Rescue teams have recovered the body of a missing Florida National Guardsman from the Chipola River near Land's Landing at Wewa.
They found 29-year-old Jeffery Holmes just before dark Wednesday afternoon in the same area they had been searching for nine days.
Holmes was home on leave from duty in Iraq when he decided to go hunting and fishing a week ago Monday. That was the last time he was seen.
Gulf County and Wewa Search and Rescue teams had focused on one area of the river where the cadaver dogs have repeated alerted. The area was full of logs, stumps and other river debris.
The process was hampered by strong river currents. Workers had to use drag lines to remove the debris.
There's no word yet on an official cause of death, but accidental drowning is listed as the tentative cause.
