Gainer Switches to GOP

For the first time ever we have an all Republican Bay County Commission.

Commission Chairman George Gainer, a longtime Democrat, made the switch to the Republican Party Wednesday.

Gainer's not the first commissioner to make the switch in mid-term. Former Commissioner Danny Sparks also switched after being elected as a Democrat several years ago.

Gainer’s decision means all five county commissioners now belong to the GOP.

The late Rick Seltzer became the first Republican ever elected to the commission in 1988.

It should be noted that party affiliation rarely plays any role in commission decisions.
