A group of Bellsouth volunteers is helping the Bay County Sheriff's Office fight domestic violence. They donated 84 cell phones to the Sheriff's Office Domestic Violence Unit and the Gate Keeper Program for the elderly.
The free phones only work when the caller dials 9-1-1.
Kathi Bowker with the Sheriff's Office Domestic Violence Unit says the program allows those who cannot afford a cell phone to call for help if necessary.
"Who may not have access to a phone, especially in an emergency situation, cell phones, they can take with them as long as they are charged and quickly dial 9-1-1 and get law enforcement en route to them when they need them."
If you would like to donate an old cell phone or accessories like a battery or charger, just drop them off at the Sheriff's Office.
