A Blue Angels jet that crashed while on a familiarization flight by a new member of the Navy precision flying team has been recovered from the Gulf of Mexico.
The pilot, 32-year-old Lt. Ted Steelman of Star, Idaho, ejected safely on December first before his aircraft crashed off Perdido Key, a barrier island on the Florida-Alabama border.
Steelman returned to duty the next day, but remains grounded pending an aviation review board decision on his flight status. The rest of the six-member team has resumed flying.
A Navy diving and salvage unit from Little Creek, Virginia, and the crew of the Coast Guard buoy tender Cypress, based in Mobile, Alabama, recovered the F/A-18 Hornet from 40 feet of water this week.
