Convicted Murderer Free From Prison

Some area law enforcement officers are not happy with the release of a Walton County killer this past weekend.

Steven Strange was released Sunday from prison after serving 15 years of a 30-year sentence for third degree murder.

Strange shot and killed a 31-year-old Game Warden named Lynn Barnes back in 1987. Stange shot Barnes three times when the officer tried to arrest him for hunting without a license.

Officer Barnes was wearing a camouflage shirt over his uniform and was driving an unmarked vehicle.

Strange claimed he didn't know Barnes was a Game Warden and that the shooting was accidental.

A Walton County Circuit Court jury in DeFuniak Springs convicted Strange of first degree murder, but he won a retrial which took place in Pensacola. That jury found him guilty of the lesser charge of third degree murder and he was sentenced to 30 years in prison.

He was released Sunday after serving 50 percent, or 15 years of the jail term.
