Around 7:30 Tuesday night, the Niceville Police Department received a call about two teenagers playing in the woods behind Hardee’s in Niceville. Police showed up to look but couldn't find anything.
About an hour later, a man who had been looking for the teens found them buried in a tunnel.
Forty-two-year-old Timothy Peregoy managed to pull 13-year-old John Auger out of the hole which was found just down a dirt path, but he was unable to pull out the 15-year-old boy who was still trapped inside.
When authorities finally dug him out, he was unconscious and not breathing. Auger was airlifted to Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola with minor injuries. The 15-year-old was taken to Twin Cities Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Niceville police believe the two teens were building a tunnel inside of a mud pit. As of Wednesday, fire and rescue personnel are working to close it up. As of Wednesday evening, police have not yet released the name of the 15-year-old.
