The Florida Police Benevolent Association is threatening to unionize the Marianna City Police Department. The problem stems from a request from the PBA to receive payroll deductions of dues and membership fees from the checks of Marianna officers who are already PBA members.

This week, the Marianna city commission turned down the request, saying the PBA could make the request next September during the next open enrollment period.

Steve Mears is a representative of the PBA making the request and says, “Payroll deduction, all they had to do was give us payroll deduction. Now they are focusing us into an election where the officers will have a chance to go union.”

There’s no word yet on the next step for unionization or if there is even any interest among the police officers in forming a union.
