Bay County Road Construction Update

The Florida Department of Transportation is issuing periodic updates on local road construction projects.

The following is an update of state road projects in Bay County from Tommie Speights DOT District #3 Public Information Director:

S 98 / Thomas Drive Intersection Improvement Project:
The recent shift of traffic on Thomas Drive completed Phase One of the elevated roadway project. The shift allows for roadway improvements along Thomas Drive adjacent to the Naval Support Facility. Crews are now in Phase Two of the project which calls for continuing work on the approach ramps and support structures for the elevated section. Phase Two is anticipated to be complete by the fall of next year. You may access information on this project at www.thomasdrive98.com.

SR 77, from SR 20 to Mill Creek (near the former SR 77 Zoo):
Traffic is on the new pavement of SR 77, from SR 20 to Mill Creek. Anderson Columbia Construction crews switched traffic to the newly paved section of SR 77 Wednesday, November 10. Work has begun on the new northbound lanes. The remaining phases of SR 77 from Mill Creek to CR 2300 and from CR 2300 to the Bailey Bridge are also under construction. Construction crews are working on the new southbound lanes from Mill Creek to CR 2300. Work will start the week of January 5, 2005 on the south section from Bailey Bridge to CR 2300. SR 79, from US 98 (SR 30A) to South of the West Bay Bridge:
Traffic is flowing smoothly on the southbound lanes of SR 79, C. W. Roberts Contracting crews are working to complete the northbound lanes. The project is anticipated to be complete by the end of the year.

US 98, from SR 390 (Beck Avenue) to Cactus Avenue:
Anderson Columbia construction crews are winding down construction the section of roadway. Crews have finished paving the mainline and are completing side streets. However, there are several punch list items that need completing. The contractor is expected to complete the entire project by early December 2004.

US 98 at Salt Creek Bridge:
Construction continues along the south-side of the Salt Creek Bridge in Mexico Beach. Gilbert Southern Corporation crews are expected to begin driving test piles for the new bridge in December. A January 2006 completion date is anticipated.

SR 30 (US 98) from the Walton County line to east of Summer Breeze Road:
Resurfacing work began the week of November 8, on US 98 from the Walton County line to east of Summer Breeze Road in Bay County. The $4.7 million, 145 day project was awarded to Anderson Columbia to mill and resurface the 6 mile stretch of roadway, modify median crossovers and install a 500 foot inspection lane on the east side of the Phillips Inlet Bridge. To improve safety and comply with FDOT access management guidelines along the corridor, median access at Christmas Three Lane, Avenue C and Venado Place will be removed and approximately 16 medians will receive extended turn lanes. Two medians east of the Phillips Inlet Bridge will be closed, a median east of Wild Heron and three east of LeGrand Drive will also be removed during the resurfacing phase of this project. Existing signage will be replaced, pavement markings upgraded and new guardrail installed.

Traffic Signal Work:
Weather permitting, Monday, November 15, traffic engineers from Ingram Signalization will install a new traffic signal at the intersection of SR 22 (Wewa Highway) and Transmitter Road (CR 2327) and extend the west bound right turn lane. Ingram will also install a mast arm traffic signal at SR 392 and Churchwell Drive, December 6. Each traffic signal installation project is scheduled for completion in 30 days.

Routine Bridge Maintenance:
The week of November 15, crews from Pneumatic Concrete Co., Inc. of Birmingham, AL will replace bridge expansion joints on the Bear Creek Bridge on US 231 and Juniper Creek Bridge on US 231.

December 7, 2004, New West Bay Bridge Public Information Meeting, 5 PM to 6 PM, West Bay Elementary School, 14813 School Drive, Panama City, FL . (217911-5-52-01) New West Bay Bridge.

Motorists are reminded to drive with caution through the construction zone. Speeding fines double when workers are present.
