Frugal Friday

The home is our refuge, at least it's supposed to be. Unfortunately, home is also the site of many everyday accidents. In this Frugal Friday report, Carla Kneeland looks at some products the Good Housekeeping Institute has judged first-rate for safety.

These are safety products or products that can provide aid in an emergency. They aren't exactly frugal, but they are well worth the money.

The common household iron, it's scorching hot and can be dangerous when it gets knocked down. If you're looking for an iron that's steady on its feet, Good Housekeeping recommends the Aquaspeed, made by T-Fal, a winner of this year's Good Housekeeping Good Buy Award.

How can you keep an ear out for two or more infants in your house? The Safety First Home Connection Monitor System got a Good Buy Award because it monitors several locations at once. It's got three transmitters which can go in three different rooms and it has two receivers which the parents can use to talk to each other. We found the audio quality was good and the range was excellent, up to 100 feet.

Want emergency road service that's available 24/7? Good Housekeeping found OnStar to be excellent, and it's there at just the press of a button. In case of an emergency, just press the red button and you're immediately connected to representatives at OnStar. If you're lost, need directions, or have some other problem with your car, simply push the blue button and you're connected to an OnStar representative who can help you.

Find yourself in the dark? The Quick Switch from Energizer was a Good Buy winner for a simple reason. This is the first flashlight to operate on three different types of batteries, AA, C or D. In our tests, we found that it lasted at least five hours.

A variety of products that will get the job done, safely. OnStar is the first service ever to win a Good Housekeeping Good Buy Award in the 10 years the magazine has been honoring innovations.
