Animal Shelter on the Way

The county received a land donation for the much needed project about a year ago but has had no design in place. That won't be the case much longer.

In Monday’s county commission meeting, commissioners voted on an architect for the project. Hatch Mott MacDonald will design the new animal control facility that will sit on 20 acres of land between Freeport and Defuniak Springs.

The entire design process will cost the county just over $90,000.

This has been a contentious issue in the past. Right now, the county sends its animals to Chipley, over 35 miles away, but county officials acknowledge that it’s important for stray Walton County animals to stay in Walton County.

"If we can get our animals that are picked up back here in Walton County, hopefully people will adopt them and our adoption rate will be higher and also quicker to return the animals that may belong to a citizen."
