A Panhandle lawmaker has secured enough support from his fellow Republicans to become speaker of the Florida House of Representatives four years from now.
If all goes as planned, Ray Sansom of Okaloosa County will take over as House Speaker in November of 2009.
Rep. Sansom of Ft. Walton Beach may have votes lined up in the House, but He still faces re-election back home.
"All this is contingent upon people in District Four saying that I ought to come back to Tallahassee and I understand that and I will continue to work hard for my district.
Sansom also told reporters, “Hopefully if they send me back two more times I can be a Speaker coming out of Okaloosa County and northwest Florida proud, make my district proud I hope. I hope I won’t embarrass them. I will work hard not to and I will bring good stable leadership for the future."
Sansom will be the first speaker from Okaloosa County in the history of the Florida House of Representatives.
