County EMS

County commissioners also discussed the future of the Emergency Response Program with Bay Medical Center Tuesday afternoon.

They unanimously agreed to a two-year contract extension with Bay Medical Center to continue providing EMS services for the county, but Commissioner Mike Thomas included a motion directing staff members to explore the possibility of the county to take over EMS after the two-year contract expires.

Bay Medical's CEO, Steve Johnson, says he would have preferred a four-year commitment to allow the hospital to improve emergency services by updating technology.

"In your own business, if you're looking to make an investment, the payback of those is not going to be two years. That's just not going to happen. There's some issues that may crop up that may have some negative reproductions relative to the service we can provide."

Commissioner Thomas says the county voters already expressed interest in a consolidation of services, and this might be a good place to start.
