Panama City Beach-- Fighting cancer is a serious mission. But if you can get people interested in that fight by having a little fun, everyone can benefit. That's what hundreds of people did Saturday night at the American Cancer Society's annual Cattle Barons Ball.
The event was held at the Edgewater Beach Resort in Panama City Beach this year.
In boots and cowboy hats, locals celebrated more than a decade of battling cancer.
Through early ticket sales and sponsorships, the local chapter of the American Cancer Society raised $70,000 before the actual event. They hope to raise another $10,000 through ticket sales at the door and a live and silent auction at the event.
“The funds are generally used for education, for advocacy and for services for local as well as nationwide cancer patients. And then there's also a specific booth set-up to raise money for “rock” which is a camp for children with cancer," said the Event Coordinator, Michael Menk.
Menk adds the funds raised from Saturday night’s event helps local cancer patients with transportation services, taking them to and from chemotherapy and the “rock” program, which gives kids battling the disease the chance to attend camp plus a trip to Disney World.
