New Addition to Navy Museum in Pensacola

The biggest plane ever to land on an aircraft carrier is the newest addition to the National Museum of Naval Aviation in Pensacola.

The hulking Marine Corps cargo plane made 21 full-stop landings aboard the USS Forrestal in 1963. The pilot who made those experimental landings says the Navy never adopted the concept but it may be revived.

Retired Rear Admiral James Flatley Thursday said the Navy didn't have a pressing need for such capability then, but last year summoned him to the Pentagon to discuss it.

Officials are interested in using such cargo planes to supply proposed sea bases that could be fitted with landing strips similar in length to a carrier's flight deck.
