Granny Amendment

County commissioners want to help those who have a parent or grandparent moving back home with a property tax break.

Bay County commissioners dubbed this the "granny amendment" and it passed four to one at Tuesday's commission meeting.

The law is intended to prevent penalizing families who let mom and dad or even grandma or grandpa move back home.

If a homeowner builds an addition to their house or makes needed renovations to the property to make room, the result could mean a higher property value and higher taxes.
Tuesday's approved law will allow a homestead reduction for these families so they aren't penalized for housing an aging relative.

Commissioner Jerry Girvin was the only commissioner to vote against the proposal. He says he would prefer an exemption for all families who house a family member, whether or not they build an addition to the house.
