NAS Pensacola Still Recovering From Ivan

A huge training building damaged by Hurricane Ivan has reopened at Pensacola Naval Air Station. The building covers nearly one million square feet.

About 4,000 students at the Naval Aviation Technical Training Center will return next week to Chevalier Hall after nearly $38 million in repairs.

But the base's commander says some of the base's most historic structures may be demolished due to storm damage.

Historic preservationists have urged the Navy to reconsider tentative plans to tear down 47 historic buildings.

Up to $570 million is expected to be spent at the base on repairs, debris cleanup and new structures to replace buildings damaged beyond repair.

Ivan hit September 16 last year.
