Second Local Hit and Run Death in Three Days

Another local hit and run traffic accident occurred early Thursday morning in Callaway.

Killed in the pre-dawn accident was 65-year-old John Maples, who has been Tyndall Air Force Base’s Game Warden for the past 15 years.

Bay County sheriff’s deputies say Maples and his brother were driving through the intersection of Kimbrel Ave and Wallace Road just before 5 a.m.

Twenty-four-year-old William Deshonn Jones, who was driving with a suspended license, ran a stop sign at the intersection and slammed into the side of the pickup truck carrying the two men.

Jones took off on foot and was arrested an hour later. Deputies found him hiding under the kitchen sink in his house a short distance away.

John Maples died nearly instantly in the crash. Tyndall officials say he was scheduled to retire in about three months. His brother, who was a passenger in his truck, was injured and was taken to a local hospital in fair condition.

Charges against Jones are pending completion of the Sheriff’s Office investigation.
