Major Search Underway for a Missing Fisherman in the Gulf

Coast Guard officials have recovered the body of one of two missing fishermen who disappeared Wednesday night when their 27-foot boat, "My Girl Too," capsized in rough seas about three miles south of Destin.

Search crews recovered the body of Julian Lee, Jr., 50 of Fayetteville, GA Friday afternoon. His body was spotted by a Coast Guard helicopter about eight miles south-southeast of the Destin pass.

The search continues for 46-year-old Riverdale, GA resident Dennis Herring, who was also on board the vessel. The pair was last heard from Thursday afternoon.

Search and rescue officials say the boat transmitted a distress signal around 4:30 Thursday.

The search for the still missing boater continues.

Seas in the Gulf of Mexico were running five to seven feet Thursday when the search began, but had calmed to three to four feet Friday under sunny skies.

The Coast Guard dispatched a rescue boat from Destin, the 87-foot cutter Coho from Panama City, a helicopter from New Orleans and a jet from Mobile, Ala., to search a 240-square-mile area.

An Okaloosa County sheriff's boat and dive team is also searching. Also taking part are helicopter crews from the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, the Okaloosa and Walton County Sheriff’s Departments.
