New Heart Treatment Available Locally

Bay Medical Center has a new cool weapon to use in blockages from heart and leg arteries.

Dr. Charles Mayes briefed the media on the Clear Path Cool Laser System that is being used at Bay Medical Center.

The Cool Laser vaporizes arterial blockages by dispersing ultraviolet light photons in short bursts. This means it won't generate heat as is common with older lasers.

Although it was originally designed for use in heart arteries, it is also useful for patients with peripheral arterial disease in the legs, something the plagues up to 20 percent of older Americans.

Dr. Mayes told reporters the new technology is also in use in the cath lab at Bay Medical Center in Panama City.

The FDA approved the use of the Clear Path Cool Laser procedure just last year.
