Monday wasn't just another day at the beach for middle schooler Shelby Standland who came to ready to work. It’s part of a weeklong effort by the county TDC to clean up and promote the county's most valuable resource.
The beaches attract tourists from all over the world who pour $684 million into the local economy. Tourism is also the leading industry in Walton County, employing more than 10,000 people.
This cleanup effort happens twice a year. The directors for this event are thankful for all the help, and think this is a good chance to get young people involved in the community.
The sixth graders got rid of a lot of trash on the beach, and also gained some valuable knowledge about the dangers of pollution.
