Wounded Panhandle Teen Saved Family From Angry Stepfather

A 19-year-old Apalachicola teenager who saved her mother and four younger siblings from her shotgun-toting stepfather is being called a hero.

But Delores Marcum is in serious condition at the hospital and her wounded leg could be amputated.

Her mother says Delores is a hero for getting her family out a window when 69-year-old Howard Enfinger became distracted as police surrounded their house on Bayview Drive in Apalachicola Saturday, but he shot her before she also fled.

Enfinger is listed as stable.

Authorities plan to charge him with attempted first-degree murder, possession of a sawed-off shotgun and two counts of kidnapping once he is released from the hospital.

The mother, Rena Enfinger, says that the standoff began when her daughter told her that the stepfather had repeatedly attacked her seven years ago.

The woman also says her husband is unemployed, on disability and often drunk, and has had held the family in persistent fear for years.
